What Recruiters Look for in Marketing Resumes

marketing resumesIt’s a great time to be looking for a new marketing job. Not only has the job market shifted toward candidates, but talented marketing professionals are now in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor, the number of marketing jobs is supposed to grow through 2022. And some positions, like marketing analyst, are expected to grow at a rate of 33.2 percent, making it one of the fastest-growing jobs this decade.

Although there are plenty of marketing jobs available, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re guaranteed to land any marketing job you apply for. You need to start with the basics and make sure your resume and your skills are up to date, and can be found easily by hiring managers and recruiters.

Good Tenure

One of the first things recruiters do when looking at resumes is to check tenure. Make sure your dates of employment and company names are up to date. If you have a LinkedIn profile, make sure the dates on your resume match up with the dates on your LinkedIn account.

In addition to accuracy, recruiters are also looking for candidates with good tenure. Having many different jobs is not a problem, but patterns of job hopping or changing companies every year are going to cause some red flags.

Add Keywords Based on Job Description

The best way to get your resume read by recruiters is to include keywords from the job description in your resume. Oftentimes, recruiters will have a list of keywords for the job and will search for resumes that contain these keywords. Make sure to only include keywords that accurately describe your experience and skills. For example, if a job description states that you need experience with Adobe Photoshop, then make sure to include those exact words in your resume. Don’t just state you have experience with photo editing tools. You can have the most extensive experience and skills out there, but if a recruiter isn’t able to see your resume, then you’ll never land the job.

Strong Writing Skills

Whatever marketing role you’re applying for, chances are very good you will have to perform some sort of writing, whether it’s on social media, a blog post, or an email to a client. Because of this, recruiters pay extra attention to spelling and grammar. Make sure to proofread and edit your resume multiple times before applying to a job, and also have a trusted friend review it for you too. Don’t let a spelling mistake be the reason you’re not call in for an interview.

As more companies start to see the need for marketing professionals in their organizations, the more jobs will be available. But remember, don’t assume the position is yours without putting in some work first. If you have the right experience, make sure it is apparent in a well written and accurate resume.
